Sightseeing by bike: Leuven

Da sich das Erkunden von Belgien im Moment etwas schwierig gestaltet, muss man zu anderen Mitteln greifen. Ich bin wohl seit 20 Jahren nicht mehr mit dem Fahrrad gefahren und siehe da, nun ist es wieder soweit und die nähere Umgebung wird somit auf 2 Rädern erkundet. Die erste Fahrradtour führte uns nach Leuven, um auch in Corona Zeiten ein bisschen Sightseeing zu machen. Mit dem Wetter hatten wir - so wie den ganzen April - viel Glück: Sonnenschein und über 20 Grad.

 

Entlang des Kanals Leuven-Dilje - oder einfach "unserem Fluss" - gibts einen tollen Radweg, der direkt nach Leuven führt. Die Strecke ist ca. 25 km und war selbst für mich zu bewältigen, auch wenn mein Hintern dann noch tagelag gelitten hat.

Leuven ist eine nette mittelgroße Stadt, die als Studentenstadt und für ihre vielen Brauereien bekannt ist. Der Weg in die Stadt hat uns auch an der Stella Artois Brauerei vorbeigeführt. Der Stadtkern ist voll von wunderschönen historischen Gebäuden, wie man sie in jeder belgischen Stadt sieht, wobei hier das Rathaus besonders hervorzuheben ist. Leider geht in Zeiten wie diesen das Flair der Stadt etwas unter, da fast alles geschlossen ist. Leuven ist ja vorallem für die vielen Bars und Cafés am Oude Markt bekannt, hier konnte man aber nur erahnen, wie es da an einem so schönen Tag aussieht, wenn man gemütlich draußen mit einem Kaffee oder Bier sitzen kann.

Since exploring Belgium is a little bit difficult at the moment, one has to resort to other means. I haven't ridden a bike for 20 years and look, now it's time again to explore the surroundings on 2 wheels. The first bicycle tour led us to Leuven to do some sightseeing in Corona times. With the weather we had - like the whole April - good luck: sunshine and over 20 degrees. Along the Leuven-Dilje canal - or simply "our river" - there is a great cycle path that leads directly to Leuven. The distance is about 25 km and was manageable even for me, even though my butt suffered for days. 

Leuven is a nice medium-sized city, known as a student city and for its many breweries. The way into the city also led us past the Stella Artois brewery. The city centre is full of beautiful historic buildings, as you can see in every Belgian city, with the town hall being the most prominent one. Unfortunately, in times like these the flair of the city gets a bit lost, as almost everything is closed. Leuven is mainly known for the many bars and cafés at the Oude Markt, but at them moment one could only guess what it looks like on such a beautiful day, when you can sit outside and relax with a coffee or beer.
